What is the problem and why is it a problem
The email template viewer should work similar to the PDF viewer where dummy data can be added to fill in any variables in the preview.
At the moment the variables are just shown as 'PI.name' in the preview. To get a good idea of what is sent to the user and to make sure all variables are used correctly in the templates the preview should show the data as it would be sent in the email.
