I'm not able to reproduce this at all in the environment that I'm using. Could you share some more details about your setup?

Sure. So I tested both on Lubuntu 24.04 and Debian 13.

$TERM is 'linux', tput colors is 8 (Debian13)
$TERM is 'xterm-256color', tput colors is 256 (Lubuntu).
