Steps to reproduce

1. Start the server with ChatControlRed installed.
2. Join the server and hold any item in the main hand.
3. Send [item] in the chat.
4. The [item] placeholder is not replaced with the held item.

Expected behavior

When a player sends [item] in chat while holding an item, ChatControlRed should replace the placeholder with the held item and display the item information in chat.

Actual behavior

The [item] placeholder does not work. It is not replaced with the item the player is holding.

There are no obvious errors in the console when this happens.

The issue can be reproduced consistently by holding an item and sending: [item] in chat.

I did some additional testing to rule out an issue with my custom item.yml.

I changed the variable type to uppercase:

Type: MESSAGE
Key: item

and also tested a minimal variable based on the example from the ChatControl documentation:

Type: MESSAGE
Key: item
Value: "player.getItemInHand().getType()"
Hover_Item: "player.getItemInHand()"

I also tested the newer Bukkit/Paper API:

Value: "player.getInventory().getItemInMainHand().getType()"
Hover_Item: "player.getInventory().getItemInMainHand()"

The result is the same in all cases: [item] is not being replaced when sent in normal player chat.

I tested this after a full server restart.

So this does not appear to be related to the JavaScript in the default item.yml or to getItemInHand() being deprecated. It looks like the MESSAGE variable itself is not being parsed.

Do you have channels enabled? try enabling channels. If it still wont work, ZIP me your config so i can try reproducing
