Include risk tables in stockplotr?

Example risk table: template for the Alaska region

1. Does your region use risk tables in reports? If yes, please include an example.
2. Do you think we should add a standardized risk table to stockplotr?

Pros:

• One less table that users must create themselves
• Tables are standardized across regions (the degree of standardization can be determined later on)

Cons:

• Risk tables seem very region-specific. It may not be possible to create a standardized table that works for everyone

@sbreitbart-NOAA PFMC CPS does not have risk tables. If you can create a standardized table that generally works for all, I think it's fine as long as we are able to turn that option off.

Is a "risk table" the same as a "decision table"? If no, can you post an example risk table please.

I was thinking about it as the same, but I guess that is potentially regional differences. I think there have been talks in different regions about decision tables. Maybe decision table is more wording appropriate here?

It is used to justify any author recommended reductions from max ABC.
Note that rankings could sometimes be counterintuitive where something like the "Population dynamics" section could be given an "Increased concerns" rating if the stock is rapidly rising, though no changes would be recommended to the ABC.

ahh, thanks Ben ... that is very different than what I was thinking, i.e., decision tables and risk tables are NOT the same thing. I think @okenk has been in charge of creating risk tables just recently for the NWFSC.

The NW/SW groundfish stock assessments started including risk tables in 2025. Here is one example of how our tables were formatted.

@chantelwetzel-noaa is correct that we use them on the west coast. (I think AFSC is the only other region that uses them.) However, they are written as plain text in csv files and do not involve any reproducible R code to produce. I do not think they should be added to stockplotr.

It appears that most regions don't use risk tables. For those that do (NWFSC, AFSC), I'm not seeing any strong preferences for adding a risk table to stockplotr. So, I'd suggest we don't include them in the package. Thoughts, @Schiano-NOAA, or anyone else?

I am in agreement. I think this seems like a regional thing rather than something that can or should be nationally standardized.

Note that I have not updated this to the 3 status levels that our current guidelines prescribe.

I would recommend not adding it to stockplotr, at least for the time being - can revisit as necessary.

Based on everyone's feedback, @Schiano-NOAA and I decided to exclude risk tables from stockplotr. Thanks again for your input!
