A possibility may be to accept keyboard input to advance levels. For levels up to 9, simply hitting 1-9 could auto-advance to the next level? Or to support more, something like 1-9a-z, or [0-9]+L, where the level number is specified? To advance waves, perhaps the same idea of [0-9]+W, or just hitting W to advance a wave.
Don't know if this might be tricky, to abort a wave? Would level managers all have to have/share special logic to immediately remove all actors and finish up?
