<p class="v2-p">When Python creates an object, it needs a way for that object to refer to <strong>itself</strong>. That is what <code>self</code> is · it is the object's own reference to itself.</p>

<h3 class="v2-h3">What Is Polymorphism?</h3>
<p class="v2-p">The word <strong>polymorphism</strong> comes from Greek and means "many forms."</p>
<p class="v2-p">In Python, polymorphism means that <strong>different classes can respond to the same method name in their own unique ways</strong>.</p>
<p class="v2-p">Real-world analogy:</p>
<p class="v2-p">Think about the instruction "make a sound." You could give that instruction to:</p>
<ul class="v2-ul"><li>A dog → it barks</li><li>A cat → it meows</li><li>A car horn → it honks</li><li>A phone → it rings</li></ul>
<p class="v2-p">Every one of them responds to "make a sound" differently. That is polymorphism.</p>
<p class="v2-p">In Python, you write the same method name across different classes, and when you call it, each class does its own version.</p>

<p class="v2-p">Notice that <code>Dog</code>, <code>Cat</code>, and <code>Person</code> are not even related by inheritance here. They just all happen to have a method called <code>speak()</code>. Python does not care about the relationship · only that the method exists. This is called <strong>duck typing</strong>.</p>
