Adobe InDesign makes it easy to hide layers while working on a document.
This is useful during production.
A designer may temporarily hide:
- previous versions
- alternative layouts
- obsolete elements
- temporary graphics
- production notes
- unused content

Over time, however, these layers can accumulate.
A document may look clean while still containing a significant amount of hidden content.

For example, a document might contain:
- a visible production layout
- an old version of the same layout on a hidden layer

The document may therefore contain much more than what appears on the page.
Remove Hidden Layers removes the targeted hidden layers together with the content they contain.

Instead of opening the Layers panel and processing hidden layers one by one:
- Open the InDesign document.

- Choose whether locked hidden layers should also be removed.

Locked hidden layers
Locked layers require additional care because removing them can affect protected production content.
Remove Hidden Layers therefore provides an explicit option controlling whether locked hidden layers should also be removed.
This allows you to choose between:
- removing hidden layers while keeping locked hidden layers
- removing all hidden layers, including locked ones
The choice is made before processing.
When a hidden layer is removed, the content contained on that layer is removed as well.
The tool therefore performs a genuine document cleanup rather than simply changing the visibility of the layers.
This is important when the objective is to eliminate obsolete or unwanted hidden production content from the document.
Remove Hidden Layers is intentionally focused on document-wide hidden-layer cleanup.
It does not provide individual layer selection.
Instead, the selected action is applied to all hidden layers matching the chosen option.
This makes the tool particularly suitable when the objective is:
"Clean all hidden production layers from this document."
rather than:
"Let me choose three specific hidden layers manually."
After processing, the tool provides a clear summary of the operation.
The summary can indicate:
- layers found
- layers removed
- layers skipped
