Tacla

A modern, self-hostable web-client for IRC

BETA — built for testing, experimentation, and early feedback

Connect to IRC networks, join channels, find people, and keep conversations within reach—even after closing your browser.

Warning

Tacla is beta software. Expect incomplete features, rough edges, and breaking changes. Do not rely on it as your only IRC client yet.

Why Tacla?

Tacla brings the familiarity of a modern team-chat interface to IRC without hiding what makes IRC useful. Networks live in a compact rail, channels and direct messages stay organized in one sidebar, and conversation details remain close at hand.

The name Tacla comes from the Romanian word „taclale”, meaning to talk or chat—often used for the simple pleasure of sitting together and having a conversation.

Features

  • Multiple IRC networks with a friendly network directory and connection setup
  • Persistent conversations powered by an IRC bouncer that stays connected
  • Channel discovery with searchable, cached IRC channel lists
  • Direct messages by nickname or by finding users from shared channels
  • Fast message search with partial, case-insensitive matching and jump-to-result
  • Rich chat experience with Markdown, emoji, attachments, topics, MOTD, and member lists
  • Slack-like navigation with compact messages, resizable details, and familiar controls

Choosing an IRC network in Tacla

Connect through the built-in network directory

Try it

You need Docker with Docker Compose.

docker compose up -d --build

Open http://localhost:3000 and sign in with the local development account:

Username: admin
Password: admin

Important

These credentials are only suitable for local testing. Change SOJU_ADMIN_USER and SOJU_ADMIN_PASS in docker-compose.yml before making Tacla reachable by anyone else.

Your connections and message history are kept in Docker volumes, so normal container restarts do not erase your conversations.

About Soju

Tacla uses a modified, experimental fork of Soju. The fork adds the integration needed by this beta and must not be confused with the official upstream Soju project. Tacla also uses VictoriaLogs for message history.

If you are looking for the official IRC bouncer, use the upstream Soju repository.

Feedback

Tacla is still taking shape. Bug reports, usability notes, and ideas from IRC users are especially welcome.
