Does the agent do what it was told, and what did that cost?

Thirteen scenarios, each a trap a real system fell into, each graded by a script that checks artifacts: git diffs, file contents, command transcripts, output regexes, canary tokens. Alongside every verdict, the token and round-trip cost of reaching it — counted by a proxy in front of the endpoint, not by asking the harness how much it spent.

No LLM judges. No dependencies. No trusting the thing under test to report its own numbers.

Measured, not asserted

Two claims carry this repo, and both are checkable without a GPU.

  • The suite grades itself in both directions. Every scenario runs a scripted compliant actor and a scripted violator; a grader that passes the compliant one but fails to catch the violator is a broken grader, and make selftest says so. Cost metrics are checked against hand-computed values, and an injected off-by-one in call counting is caught on seven independent metrics. → make selftest, src/adherence/selftest.py
  • The token counts are not the harness's word for it. A recording proxy sits in front of the inference endpoint and logs every call. Over a 20-run calibration set the proxy and the adapter agree to 0.000% — aggregate and worst single run — with call counts matching at 189/189. On disagreement the proxy wins and the adapter's figures are dropped. → make calibrate, src/adherence/proxy.py

That second one is not ceremony. Reading cost off the harness's own session total under-reports a subagent-dispatching run by 3.1×, because dispatched subagents run in their own sessions and the parent's total does not contain them.

What it measures

Adherence Did it follow the operator's instructions? Scope, honesty, format, constraints, security, dispatch, discipline — graded deterministically per scenario.
Round trips Inference calls to completion, counted by the proxy, which cannot miscount a request it handled.
Tokens Input and output per call, including every subagent, with cache read/write when the endpoint reports them.
Exploration Probes before the first edit; the same file read twice.
Abandonment Fewer than 2 tool calls, or no edit where an edit was the job. The cheapest agent is one that does nothing.
Arms Six instruction surfaces from one source of truth, for A/B-ing what you put in front of the model.

Run it against a model

You need an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. bench/opencode-bench.json ships an example provider block pointing at a local vLLM on 127.0.0.1:8000 — rename the provider and change baseURL for your own; nothing else knows its name.

Every run goes through bench/isolate.sh, which swaps XDG_CONFIG_HOME to a benchmark-only opencode config so your daily one is never loaded. Set ADH_PROXY_LOG and it also starts the recording proxy and stops it on the way out:

make matrix has four views: every arm/scenario cell, a per-arm rollup with paired geometric-mean ratios, the (cost, pass-rate) plane with the Pareto frontier marked, and the proxy-vs-adapter gate live.

Cost always prints beside pass rate. An arm that is cheaper and passes less is a trade, and the frontier says so where a ratio would not.

s04's correct answer is to edit nothing, s02's is a one-line report. Scenarios like those carry expects_edit: 0 so "didn't edit anything" isn't scored as giving up.

Harness-agnostic by construction

Adapters run a harness and emit a normalized transcript.jsonl. Graders never learn which harness ran. src/adherence/schema.py owns every key name, with constructors, a validator, and goldens — a key typo'd in one adapter and not another is a silent zero, indistinguishable from a real measurement of zero.

A check that needs an event the adapter cannot produce reports ungradeable, never fail. A harness capability gap is not a model failure, and conflating them makes the scoreboard lie about whichever harness is least instrumented.

Two adapters ship: adapters/opencode.sh (reads opencode run --format json for per-call tokens, and joins in subagent sessions) and adherence.adapters.api (a minimal tool loop against any OpenAI-compatible endpoint). Run both and the difference is the harness's contribution.

Security

This runs LLM agents with shell access, unattended, in a loop. The bench config denies network-capable and privilege-escalating bash and never loads your daily config — but deny-globs match command strings, and command strings can be constructed. Read SECURITY.md before pointing it at anything you care about.

src/adherence/tui/ is vendored verbatim from pane (GPL-3.0), which is why this is GPL rather than permissive. Upstream owns that API — re-vendor with pane's tools/vendor.sh rather than diverge.
