v4.37.2

  • The new address format for the config-file input that was introduced in CodeQL Action 4.37.0 is now enabled by default. In addition to the format described there, the remote= prefix can now be used to explicitly indicate that the input refers to a remote file. All previous input formats continue to be accepted as well. #4023
  • The CodeQL Action can now make use of configured private registries in Default Setup to retrieve CodeQL configuration files from remote repositories that require authentication. This will allow customers to store their CodeQL configuration in a single repository that can then be referenced by Default Setup workflows in other repositories. We expect to roll this and other, related changes out to everyone in July. #4007

CodeQL Action Changelog

See the releases page for the relevant changes to the CodeQL CLI and language packs.

[UNRELEASED]

  • This version of the CodeQL Action adds support for the tools input for the codeql-action/init step to be specified using a github-codeql-tools repository property. This feature will gradually be rolled out following the release of this version. Once rolled out, this allows for the CodeQL CLI version that is used in GitHub-managed workflows, such as Default Setup, to be set to a custom value. For example, customers who run into issues with rate limits when a new CodeQL CLI version is released can set the value to toolcache to always use the CodeQL CLI version that is available in the runner toolcache. For Advanced Setup workflows, the value provided for tools in the workflow definition always takes precedence unless the value of the repository property starts with !. #4037

4.37.3 - 22 Jul 2026

No user facing changes.

4.37.2 - 21 Jul 2026

4.37.1 - 16 Jul 2026

  • Upcoming breaking change: Add a deprecation warning for customers using CodeQL version 2.20.6 and earlier. These versions of CodeQL were discontinued on 1 July 2026 alongside GitHub Enterprise Server 3.16, and will be unsupported by the next minor release of the CodeQL Action. #3956
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.26.1. #4019

4.37.0 - 08 Jul 2026

  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.26.0. #3995
  • In addition to the existing input format, the config-file input for the codeql-action/init step will soon support a new [owner/]repo[@ref][:path] format. All components except the repository name are optional. If omitted, owner defaults to the same owner as the repository the analysis is running for, ref to main, and path to .github/codeql-action.yaml. Support for this format ships in this version of the CodeQL Action, but will only be enabled over the coming weeks. #3973

4.36.3 - 01 Jul 2026

No user facing changes.

4.36.2 - 04 Jun 2026

  • Cache CodeQL CLI version information across Actions steps. #3943
  • Reduce requests while waiting for analysis processing by using exponential backoff when polling SARIF processing status. #3937
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.25.6. #3948

4.36.1 - 02 Jun 2026

No user facing changes.

4.36.0 - 22 May 2026

  • Breaking change: Bump the minimum required CodeQL bundle version to 2.19.4. #3894
  • Add support for SHA-256 Git object IDs. #3893
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.25.5. #3926

4.35.5 - 15 May 2026

  • We have improved how the JavaScript bundles for the CodeQL Action are generated to avoid duplication across bundles and reduce the size of the repository by around 70%. This should have no effect on the runtime behaviour of the CodeQL Action. #3899

Verdict: APPROVE as-is. Do not push anything to this branch.

Reviewed independently rather than trusting the bot. Nothing to change.

SHAs verified against upstream, not assumed

pin old new resolved from
actions/checkout 9c091bb2 = v7.0.0 3d3c42e5 = v7.0.1 repos/actions/checkout/git/ref/tags/v7.0.1
github/codeql-action/{init,analyze} 7188fc36 = v4.37.1 e4fba868 = v4.37.3 tag list for both SHAs

Both new SHAs match their claimed tags exactly, and the old SHAs matched theirs, so the comment convention is honest.

checkout v7.0.1 is net security-positive here

Only two source files changed upstream (src/input-helper.ts, src/git-command-manager.ts). I read the full patch:

  • #2521 (ASCII-only trim) is a real hardening fix. core.getInput()'s default trim strips BOM/NBSP, so a fork branch named <BOM> + 40 hex chars trimmed down to a bare SHA and got reclassified as a commit, bypassing the fork-checkout guard. Now the SHA classification uses ASCII-only trimming. No call site here passes ref:, so this path is not even reached.
  • #2530 (regex-escape --unset values) does run here: git config --unset treats the value as a regex. This is post-job credential cleanup on an ephemeral runner. No effect on build output or test results.
  • #2518 (skip the unsafe-PR check on a default self-checkout) is the one worth scrutiny, and it is a no-op for this repo. The guard only ever fires for pull_request_target / workflow_run. Every checkout here lives in ci.yml (push/pull_request/workflow_dispatch), codeql.yml (push/pull_request/schedule) or dependency-review.yml (pull_request), so it returned at the event-name check both before and after. This repo's only pull_request_target workflow (pr-title.yml) and only workflow_run workflow (release-prepare.yml) contain no local actions/checkout step.

Security posture preserved: all 5 checkout call sites still carry persist-credentials: false.

codeql-action v4.37.1 -> v4.37.3

4.37.2 added a new config-file address format and private-registry config fetching; 4.37.3 is "no user facing changes". This workflow passes only languages: and queries: security-extended, no config-file, so neither is reachable. The default CodeQL bundle was last bumped in 4.37.1, which is the old pin, so the analysis engine does not change and no new alerts can appear from this bump.

I considered pinning the # v4 comments to # v4.37.3 and decided against it

github/codeql-action is the only SHA pin whose comment does not name a precise version, so tightening it looked like a free consistency win. Three findings killed it:

  1. It is deliberate, not drift. In 58ba3ece ("SHA-pinning, security hardening") you hand-wrote precise comments for 8 actions in that same commit and wrote # v4 for both codeql-action entries. You then edited codeql.yml again in da91c76c ("harden CI security") and left it.
  2. Pushing to a Dependabot branch stops Dependabot rebasing it unless the commit says [dependabot skip], and @dependabot recreate wipes manual edits outright. That is a real degradation of the update pipeline for a comment that changes nothing at runtime.
  3. # v4 is not an outlier. Three uses: refs in this repo are bare major tags with no SHA at all.

If you ever do want it, it belongs in its own two-line PR off master, not here.

Surfaced, deliberately not folded in

The three reusable-workflow refs are unpinned mutable tags: release-prepare.yml:43, release.yml:32, release-trigger.yml:42 all point at chhoumann/obsidian-plugin-workflows/...@v4. These are the highest-privilege paths in the repo (contents: write, actions: write, RELEASE_APP_PRIVATE_KEY), one of them on pull_request_target. Dependabot will not convert a tag ref to a SHA, so this will never self-correct. Worth its own decision; it should not ride on this PR.

Also checked for drift: harden-runner, pnpm/action-setup, setup-node, dependency-review-action and amannn/action-semantic-pull-request are all already at their latest releases. The group covered exactly what was outdated.

Risk: low. Mergeable now, in any order relative to the others (no lockfile involvement).
