Dr Steven Huckle

Where code, creativity and curiosity meet.

I’m a computing educator, curriculum designer, software developer and writer exploring the spaces between technology, teaching and creative practice. I build software, games, research artefacts and learning experiences to test ideas in public—and to learn what becomes possible when those forms meet.

Current focus

My current work connects three strands:

  • practical software, games and teaching programmes;
  • research into responsible technology, decentralised systems and digital commons; and
  • creative practice across writing, games and interactive media.

I’m particularly interested in turning concepts into small, usable systems: artefacts that can be played, taught with, examined, challenged and improved.

Selected projects

Project What I’m building or exploring
The Horizontal Front A satirical, free and open-source arcade game about collective power, mutual aid and resistance to hierarchical systems. It is also an experiment in building a privacy-respecting, accessible and accountable digital commons. Source and governance →
Quizmo A daily, rapid-fire numerical quiz: ten questions, ten seconds each and four increasingly chaotic layouts. It explores the meeting point between knowledge, reflexes, spatial memory and replayable game design.
Introduction to Building 3D Games in Unity The first in a workshop series that helps learners build 3D games through practical, incremental experimentation.

My repositories also contain teaching materials, research artefacts and smaller experiments branching from these themes.

Teaching and curriculum

I design university modules, intensive bootcamps, assessments, workshops and supporting resources for learners and tutors. My current teaching work includes:

  • Creative Process software development bootcamps — eight-week programmes that take new developers from workflows, HTML and CSS through JavaScript, React, testing, deployment and independent projects. An earlier June 2026 edition is also public.
  • Data Visualisation Python Companion — practical material supporting postgraduate Data Visualisation and Intelligence study at the University of Roehampton.
  • Data Analysis and Research Skills (DA&RS) — curricula, lectures, workshops, assessments and tutor resources that help students reason with evidence and communicate research clearly.
  • Creative computing and games — Unity-based teaching that connects programming with narrative, visual design, iteration and collaborative development.

My CV gives the broader context: more than three decades of technical practice, teaching in higher education and career-transition settings, curriculum design, games programming and research.

Tools and methods

  • TypeScript, JavaScript, React and Next.js for web applications, games and interfaces
  • Node.js and Payload for backend and full-stack systems
  • Markdown, Pandoc and LaTeX for research, papers and presentations
  • Git and GitHub for versioning, publishing and open collaboration
  • Design Science Research and iterative prototyping as a methodological backbone
  • Small scripts and transparent tooling for the glue between systems

I favour simple, composable stacks whose plumbing I can understand. I stay curious about new tools without treating novelty as a goal in itself.

What I’m learning next

  • writing more functionally in TypeScript, React and Next.js;
  • using AI in ways that are useful, legible and responsibly governed;
  • finding new ways for software, teaching and writing to shape one another;
  • designing games as vehicles for ideas as well as play; and
  • carrying research prototypes into dependable, accessible systems.

Elsewhere

I’m open to thoughtful discussion, collaboration, critique and the exchange of ideas.

Guiding principle

Ship small bets, and learn fast.

I build small enough to discover what matters, learn from what fails and grow what resonates.

Licensing varies by project and by kind of work. Please consult the LICENSE or licensing documentation in the relevant repository before reusing code, writing or media.
