Backport patches from mailing lists & plan9port

There are other patches available for sam, some of which may not have landed on 9front yet, which we should grab from the mailing lists, plan9port git history, etc.

Should double-check any others here are addressed, too. I thought I applied all of them, but evidently some work on sam happened in the last couple years.

http://sam.cat-v.org/ has some extra stuff, including a Windows port (hahahaha)

Archive of everything I was able to get out of the "windows port" downloads - it does indeed contain executables, unsure (and uninterested in) if this can build a new executable, though: https://github.com/japanoise/pf9-archive
