Microsoft 365 access from Claude Code and Codex through the Microsoft Graph API: Outlook mail and calendar, Teams chats and channel messages, presence, meetings and transcripts, SharePoint, OneDrive, OneNote, Planner, Microsoft To Do, AI meeting insights, contacts, and the org chart.
The plugin ships a single skill, mgraphctl. It is a Python re-implementation of the msgraph
skill, run with uv, with a noun-verb command line (mail list, calendar create, chats dm,
…) instead of Node's flag-driven modes. It is an original design for this repository — not a
port of, and not tracking, any upstream project — and it extends the Node skill's coverage with
mail triage, mailbox settings and automatic replies, scheduling (getSchedule,
findMeetingTimes), find-or-create Teams DMs, presence, SharePoint lists and uploads, OneDrive
writes and sharing links, a unified search command, and a raw api escape hatch. Every write
verb supports --dry-run, and no data command ever opens a browser.

checkout instead with codex plugin marketplace add /absolute/path/to/mgraphctl, then run the
same codex plugin add command. The marketplace packages the entire repository so the skill,
launcher, Python sources and lockfile stay together.
The skill resolves the launcher from its installed location. In Codex, replace
${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/mgraphctl in the examples below with the quoted absolute launcher path
reported by the skill. That Claude variable is not required in Codex. For login in your own
terminal, use the actual absolute path, not the variable.
The CLI is also on PyPI, under the same version as the plugin:

mgraphctl statusThe only prerequisite is uv. On first use in a given environment,
the plugin's shim script creates a Python virtual environment and installs the CLI's dependencies
automatically — this takes about 10-40 seconds once; every run after that starts immediately.
Nothing else needs to be installed by hand.

Before the first login, register a public-client application in your tenant (or ask an administrator for the id of one) and tell mgraphctl its client id, once:

Only what you ask for. All 123 verbs as tools would cost the client a great deal of context,
so --capabilities names the command groups to expose. Omitted, it is
core,mail,calendar,people,chats; all is accepted and covers everything except api, the raw
Graph escape hatch, which is only ever exposed by naming it. mcp tools prints the resolved list.
Read-only until told otherwise. Verbs that change something appear only with --allow-write.
Tools also carry the MCP readOnlyHint / destructiveHint annotations, so a host can prompt
accordingly — but the annotations are hints, and --allow-write is the gate.
Results stay small. There is no --json tool argument. Every tool takes output_format
(text, the default compact table, or json for the full payload as structured content) and
output_file, which writes the result under --output-dir and returns a link instead of the
payload. Anything past --max-inline-bytes (25 KB) is written and linked whichever was asked, so
one wide fetch cannot flood the client. Written files are readable back as MCP resources. Every
path a tool argument names is confined to --output-dir — destinations like --output, and
equally files a verb reads, such as --attach and --body-file — and the server runs from
inside that directory, so a verb's own default destination lands there too.
The protocol revision is 2026-07-28, plus the earlier ones the SDK negotiates. Deprecated
features — the HTTP+SSE transport, protocol sessions, the standalone GET stream, resumable
streams — are not implemented.
--transport http exists, and it binds loopback only; anything else is a usage error rather than a
warning. The reason is worth stating plainly: the server acts as exactly one user — whoever's
sign-in is cached — and has no way to tell callers apart, so any reachable port is that person's
mailbox, calendar and files. It therefore also requires a bearer token (MGRAPHCTL_MCP_TOKEN, else
one is generated and printed at startup) and refuses any request carrying an Origin header that
--allow-origin does not list, which is the DNS-rebinding defence the transport spec requires of
local servers.
That token is a local shared secret, not OAuth, and the server deliberately advertises no
protected-resource metadata. Conforming to the MCP authorization spec means validating tokens
issued for this server as their audience; accepting the caller's Entra token instead is exactly the
token passthrough the spec prohibits, and doing it properly needs a second Entra app registered as
an API plus an on-behalf-of exchange — which requires a client secret that a locally installed CLI
cannot keep. Prefer stdio, where credentials come from the environment as the spec prescribes.

Virtual environment: under
${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_DATA}when Claude Code sets it, otherwise~/.cache/mgraphctl/venv($XDG_CACHE_HOME/mgraphctl/venvwhen that variable is set). Persistent across plugin updates; safe to delete, it is rebuilt on the next run. -
Token cache: the OS keychain (macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Locker, Linux Secret Service) when one is available, as a single
mgraphctlitem whose account is the cache path. Without one it is~/.mgraphctl/token_cache.json, mode0600, in a0700directory.token_store = auto | keyring | filein the config file, orMGRAPHCTL_TOKEN_STORE, picks;statusshows which store is in use. A cache file left by an earlier version is imported into the keychain on the first run and then deleted. When the keychain refuses (locked, denied, no session bus), the file takes over for that run with one warning on stderr. On macOS a rebuilt Python (a new venv, auvupgrade) asks once for keychain access; answer "Always Allow".token_store = "file"restores the old behaviour. -
Config file:
~/.mgraphctl/config.toml, optional (--config PATHorMGRAPHCTL_CONFIGto point elsewhere). Two named scope sets cover almost everything:
default— the 23 scopes the Nodemsgraphskill has always requested: mail read/send, calendars, files, sites, chats, channel messages, meeting transcripts, people, contacts, notes, tasks, and group membership. This is whatloginrequests unless told otherwise.extended—defaultplus write access to mail and mailbox settings, presence, directory user lookup, shared calendars, chat creation, and team/channel listing. Request it withlogin --scopes extended; running it again on an already-consented account adds the new scopes with one more consent prompt, no re-login needed.
A handful of scopes are on-demand only, requested with --scope <name> on the command that needs
them (meetings recordings, org manager|reports|chain for another user, presence get USER) —
they are never in default or extended.
Some tenants require an administrator to grant consent once for the app registration. If a
command fails with error[CONSENT_REQUIRED], the error prints the admin-consent URL to send to
your Microsoft 365 administrator:

What differs from the Node msgraph skill:
- Commands are noun-verb (
mail list,calendar create,chats send) instead of Node's flag-driven modes (--emails,--calendar --create,--send). mail listdefaults to the Inbox;msgraph'semailsmode listed the whole mailbox. Pass--folder allfor the old behaviour.- Exit codes differ: this CLI uses 0 (success), 1 (runtime error), 2 (usage error), 3 (auth or
permission problem), 4 (not found) —
msgraphwas less consistent, including exiting 0 when not logged in.
mgraphctl: 'uv' is not installed— installuv(see Prerequisite above) and try again.- First run is slow — the shim is building the virtual environment (10-40 seconds); it prints a notice to stderr while doing so, and every later run is fast.
error[CONSENT_REQUIRED]— an administrator must grant consent once; the error prints the admin-consent URL (see Scopes above).error[NOT_LOGGED_IN]— runloginyourself in your own terminal; data commands never open a browser on their own.error[MISSING_SCOPE]— the cached sign-in doesn't cover this command; runlogin --scopes extended, orlogin --scope <name>for an on-demand scope.claimsexits 3 on a stale or missing cache — it decodes the cached token locally and never makes a network call, so it cannot refresh an expired token; runlogin(orstatus, which does refresh silently) first.- Device-code login is blocked — some tenants apply Conditional Access policies that require a compliant, registered device; the device-code flow cannot satisfy those and interactive browser login is the only option.
- Behind a proxy — set
HTTPS_PROXY(andHTTP_PROXYif needed); the CLI honours the standard proxy environment variables. - Times look wrong — the CLI detects your local IANA time zone automatically; override it with
MGRAPHCTL_TZ=Europe/Warsawor the global--tzoption if detection picks the wrong zone.

CI (.github/workflows/ci.yml) runs the suite on Python 3.10–3.13, ruff, uv lock --check and a
credential scan on every push. Releases are annotated mgraphctl--vX.Y.Z tags on main, cut with
claude plugin tag; the tag publishes the package to PyPI and a GitHub Release. See VERSIONING.md.
